Chapter 2: outdoor theatre grows due to the democratisation of art after WWI and the impact of commuication technologies (film, television and video) on the performing arts.
p. 10 new techologies reproduce illusion more effetivly, a illusion that reuires less effort of the imagiation –> theatre cannot comptete –> theatre moves away from naturalism
p.11 great advatage of thetre: proximity of the audiece and possibility of interaction with them.
Outdoor theatre:
- less ca be hidde–> honesty abouut the mehanics of its operation
- mobile –> it must ot rely on on sets ad lightening
- difficulty of hearing tet outside–> more emohasis on visual image, physical skills, improvisation than on the written word
- no defined spacial arrangements –> all kind of interaction with the public is possible
- p. 13 intends to reach people who are unfamiliar with theatre, it therefore can never afford to become too elitist: well crafted in methods not normally thought of as art but equally as exacting
